unit 6: Rotation & Gravitation
In unit 6, we will examine objects that move in a circular pattern. Students will be able to apply the concepts of centripetal force, torque, and gravitational force.
standards
U6.1 - I can relate radius and velocity to the centripetal acceleration of an object and describe the direction of an object’s velocity and acceleration at any instant as it moves in a circular path..
U6.2 - I can analyze and solve problems for object’s traveling in horizontal or vertical circular paths.
U6.3 - I can apply the definition of torque and calculate torque for a given force or on an object due to gravity.
U6.4 - I can analyze statics problems by applying the conditions for translational or rotational equilibrium.
U6.5 - I can apply Newton’s Law of Universal Gravitation to determine the force that one mass exerts on another apply it to determine the gravitational field strength at a point away from a mass.
U6.6 - For a circular orbit, I can describe how velocity, period, and centripetal acceleration depend on the radius of the orbit and derive expressions for the velocity and period of an object in circular orbit.
U6.7 - I can derive Kepler’s 3rd Law for the case of circular orbits.
